Highs and Lows in Motown

Starting low - waking up at 5 AM.

High - business class. Whoo-hoo!

Low - too early for booze. Even for me.

Arrival in Detroit. This is neither a high nor a low, simply a statement of fact.

High - Had an AMAZING session of eating, gabbing and drinking (it was noon by this point, not that I have to justify my drinking habits to you) with some of the most effusive, entertaining and incisive women I've ever been introduced to all at once in front of multiple cameras. I can't tell you how fascinating I found our conversation, and yes, by the end I was a bit tipsy. Which made it all the more fun. Thanks, ladies! (I will post the resulting Borders vids as soon as they're up.... even if I come off like a moron.)

Low - conversation about a reporter writing a story about people who hate me. Ah well.

High - Mm. Midday nap in quiet hotel room. Also, complimentary wine waiting!

Expected High - Q&A at the Birmingham Borders store tonight from 7 to 8. Please to come!

Business class?! I am jealous. I'm usually in economy squished up like a sardine. Oh, and the person next to me always hogs the arm rest so my other arm is sort of dangling uncomfortably on my lap.

Anyhow, I just bought Julie and Julia and can't wait to read it. The previews of the movie amused me because I cannot cook worth a dang either. Things blow up, I cry, my husband tries to console me, I cry some more...

Argh. This is take two. Apparently, you have to sign up THEN leave the comment... So it deleted what I'd originally (and worded much classier) written. Ahem, I'm reading your book and it's an insight to say the least. Not to sound creepy, but I see myself between so many of the pages. So, I'm raising my whiskey to cooking dangerously... and seriously, is there ever such a thing as too early for cocktails?

I have never "blogged" nor responded to a blog before but I just finished the book & wanted to check this out.

The book was great (although, to be honest,I did "speed read" through the parts about the lobsters...) LOL

Looking forward to the movie, although of course we all know the book is always better :)

Dear Ms. Julie Powell, you are an INSPIRATION. I just saw the screening of the movie and feared it wouldn't do my Julia justice but, it did! It absolutely did! Thank you so much for the blogs, the book and the movie. I miss Julia everyday and look forward to watching her repeats on MPT and PBS every Saturday morning. May you have all the successes in the world! Good luck with EVERYTHING!

Julie, A huge number of your readers find your book inspirational. Can you explain what makes it so? Either way, quite a triumph! You're work is held in the highest regard on both sides of the Atlantic. Love that photo of you receiving your honorary degree on the staircase at Cordon Blue. Magnifique!

Ahh, midday naps.

And what's wrong with a bloody mary or two to start the day? ;) We do that on Fridays at my office sometimes, it doesn't suck.

Very surprised to find out that when I went into Borders to kill some time tonight before a rehearsal that you were doing a Q&A and signing copies of Julie and Julia. I've wanted to read it for awhile and now have extra incentive. I also plan to try the True Romance drinking game you mentioned. That could get ugly fast! Good luck with all the movie events and with the next book!

Julie, I just got home from the screening of your movie. What the hell...no, sorry...what the f*#@ was that?!?! It was one of the most tremendously disappointing things I have ever seen. There was no bone marrow, no Buffy, no maggots. Pretty much everything that was there was just completely and utterly wrong. If it weren't for Meryl Streep I would've walked out of the theatre. The person portrayed in that movie was not at all the same person whose book I just finished reading for the second time. I understand that some things are usually changed a bit in a movie adaptation, but DAMN!!! I think you should brutally murder Nora Ephron, chop her body into quivering little chunks, and devise a fine new recipe for human bourguignon! Go Hannibal Lector on the bitch, it's what she deserves for the terrible disservice she did you!

I just finished your book and instantly fell in love with you and your amazing project. Your sincerity and willingness to bare all is so inspiring and has gotten me a step closer -- although many steps still remain -- to one day gaining the confidence to share my own writing with the world. Can't wait for the movie!

People hate you? That's a testament to the natural stupidity of people.

A friend turned me on to The Julie/Julia Project blog when you were about halfway through the project, and I still recommend that people read it in addition to the book. I guess I'm partial to the original source material!

I'm disappointed to see in amurcek's colorful comment here that the movie removes some of the Julie-ness. No Buffy?! Please tell me that they kept the pet snake in the cowboy boot!

And as for people not liking you, well, I guess that means you've "arrived!" There were people who didn't like Julia in her day too.

Good luck on the tour. Don't get too run down.

Cheers!

WHO is that "O'Reilly" character? "can you explain what makes it so?" - creepy!!!!! with a capital K. ha ha. Living the high life, as well you should! I just read in one of the other comments that there is no "marrow" scene in the movie... damn! Oh, well... guess that's why they say "buy the book"...I'm raising my bourbon and diet coke to your continued sucess. peace!
