Julie Powell, College Lecturer?

No, not really, god forbid. But I am giving a talk at the Founder's Day weekend at my alma mater on Saturday. For 45 minutes. Terrifying. So - what should I talk about? I'm kind of serious.... anyone who has any bright ideas on what they'd like to hear me talk about if it were them will be listened to attentively....

How about talking about how a lot of women have found a voice through blogging. And, I'm not just talking about the "mommy bloggers." There are a lot of women who have carved out a niche for themselves in a lot of different areas.

I agree with the above comment. How about how blogging has changed the lives of so many women.

It has given us a way to become connected to other women with the same interests. Literally, opened up a whole new world.

I like the above idea too. You were actually my inspiration to start blogging. I saw Julie/Julia & I was inspired to make my own lil niche here. Also an idea is your reaction to how many people you have inspired to blog?

Good luck with the lecture. =)

Well, having come to know your name from watching the movie, if I was going to be in attendance, I'd be interested in just about anything you had to say.

What I'd probably be most interested in hearing, though, is about how you felt as your name was increasingly known and discussed, and your insights into how the Internet has really changed the game for the common person.

You have an amazing story, and have a unique opportunity to bring hope and inspiration to people looking to make their mark upon the world in some way or another. I'm sure whatever you speak about will matter to your audience.

I do hope that you'll blog about it, about what you said, and about how it went!

Best wishes,
Joe

How about talking about your dreams and aspirations when you were in college, how they've changed (or not), and the unforeseen path you've taken to get where you are today? Incorporating the transformative power of blogging, not only on your relationship with the larger world, but with yourself.

Sort of related to these topics is JK Rowling's commencement address at Harvard last year. I don't know if you've heard it, so I pass it along (I hope as inspiration, not intimidation): http://harvardmagazine.com/commencement/the-fringe-benefits-failure-the-importance-imagination

Good luck!

I went to evening college way back when and don't really know what Founders Day is. Who is your audience? What would they like to hear. What could have been in their minds when they invited you to speak? Somebody thought you'd be a good speaker for them; maybe you could ask them if there's a particular topic or aspect of your story they'd like to hear about.

If that's not a good idea, and it probably isn't, tell them how your experience as a student prepared you so that you could do what you have done. Maybe Dr. Johnson's Physics class helped you boil water properly or something.

Failing any of that, maybe some good old inside stories of behind the scenes stuff from getting the book published or anything involved in the making of the movie. That's all I can offer at the moment. I have a feeling that you will endear yourself to them in some way, and I applaud you for that in advance!!

Sincerely,
Ned

Definitely something along the lines of what WhenPigsFly suggests. But be sure to make it personal. People will want to hear about YOUR story, YOUR experience, not just about women and blogging in general.

I know I made the commitment to blog more regularly after seeing Julie & Julia. I think you've been an inspiration to many.

Good luck!

I like Roving Lemon's comments. And I also don't know your audience, but I think a good message is that you probably didn't have clear-cut plans when you started out, and that life more often than not takes you into directions where you just kind of end up - and sometimes it's very interesting stuff that you hadn't planned on.

As a college lecturer... seriously... I am.... it's always best to talk about what YOU are excited about, not what you think others will be excited about. If you try to tailor or pander to your audience, you'll not engage them half as well as you would bubbling and babbling over something you really, really dig.

Hope it helps!

I would have loved to hear you speak at my school, you'll do great :) I'm a fan of the book who STILL hasn't been able to see the movie, my husband and I haven't been to the theater since we had our 1 year old daughter. This coming from a movie buff couple who formerly would see a movie on both Sat & Sun! I'm anxiously waiting the DVD release. Anyway, I love re-reading Julie & Julia and pass on first edition copies from Half Price Books (yea - I live in Austin :)) to new peeps I get acquainted with. Have a great day, and enjoy the honor of speaking at your school!

So, you could speak to how that sometimes you find your true career path when you get off the plotted course. By doing what you love, owning what makes you special and then doing something that speaks to that- just like that girl in the movie with all the recipes- yeah...that's it. It seems that with today's job market uncertainty and the explorative nature of today's graduates, that they need to be encouraged to own their own talents and explore that. You are the poster child for that, I would think. It is why I loved your story.

11:59 AM
Blogger Roberta said...

Well I'm the odd woman out here...I've not read your book or seen the movie (I do want to see the movie asap though)...but I started reading your blog over 18 months ago when I started my blog and what "pulled" me into your story was just that, your story. The fact that you went to college, got your degree and then had to face the reality of the "daily grind"...not the stuff you were exactly dreaming of when in school. Life as an adult can be a real grind at times. BUT you didn't go crazy and go out drinking every night or quit your job and move back in with mum...NO instead you found a way to be a RESPONSIBLE adult and make the best of your day job by finding something to look forward to when you got home at night. Sometimes doing what we have to do as adults...like KEEP OUR DAY JOBS and pay our bills is not at all "glamorous" but it has to be done. AND you can choose to be HAPPY where you are by making your own happiness...and your blog did just that! Like many of the "mommy" bloggers are doing...the side benefits are amazing. NOT all of us are going to get book/movie deals...like you and "The Pioneer Woman" and that is okay. Because bloggin gives all of us a way to connect to ourselves and to be OKAY with wherever we are in our lives/careers etc. SO in short I guess that's what our college students need to hear...DON'T GIVE UP ON YOUR DREAMS...your hard work and degrees are the steppping stones and they must find a way to be HAPPY wherever they are after graduation. Hope this helps, Roberta

A good commencement speech is like a good blog: personal, funny, engaging, unexpected. So, regardless of the specific topic, if you speak as well as you blog, I'm sure you'll do just fine.

Did you become more mindful of your writing as you gained an audience? The concept of how your project took on a life of its own is fascinating and unique. Many aspire to be writers as college students. You are an example of the cutting edge in the profession. Many college professors are unaware of the possibilities of the blogosphere. That could guide your lecture. I would be interested to hear the evolution of your work.

i think the idea that you can speak on is .... the experience that you were not happy/satisfied, so you did something. and that movement mixed some things together and something unexpected was created.

message -- get up off your ass and do something, try something, take a cooking class, but just do not sit there and think about what you wish you had done or are not doing......

do not let "the economy" be the excuse.

and the naked thing, isn't that a brady bunch episode ???

Was Julia Child always so carefree and so full of life and joy? I remember watching episodes of her cooking on PBS. Sometimes I would go to the kitchen and start cooking myself but I guess I didn't have that discipline that you had, if I couldn't get it right, I gave up and moved on.

I thought it was sad when they took the show off the air. It was quite devastating. But anyways, to talk about at your lecture, talk about the great time you had making all that yummy food or about that time you made that jello look like thing with the pork. Did you ever make that again, and was it a success? Hell, that damn thing looked pretty disgusting to tell you the truth. Or talk about what made you decide to write a book. Who/what inspired you to write a book in the first place and then end up turning it into a movie. And how do you get so inspired by someone, and have them not ever read your blog plus not ever getting to meet them in person??

"Julie" and Julia and Me
Julie Powell '95, author of Julie & Julia: My Year of Cooking Dangerously and the upcoming Cleaving: A Story of Marriage, Meat and Obsession, discusses the strange journey that led her from an unsatisfying existence as a secretary to a new life as a writer, by way of Julia Child and blogging. She'll describe a perfect boeuf bourguignon, the exact surreal quality of seeing oneself depicted by Amy Adams on the big screen, and what it's like to have your idol think you're a twit.

Just watched the movie Julie and Julia. Thought it was inspiring and very well done. Looked forward to seeing it for sometime probably because of who starred in it (Meryl Streep) and that it was Nora Ephron.
Book marked your blog so I will certainly be making a point of reading more from your life. I love food and didn't really know much about Julia Child. But I think I will certainly be having a go at trying out a few of her recipes.

Unfortunately the movie, which has been recently released here in Italy and which I've just finished to see, it's not. Great actors, great Meryl Streep's performance but the screenplay just doesn't do justice to your passionate story about finding yourself through cooking.

Advice for the talk - Tell people do do lots of stuff - whatever comes to mind and seems like a good idea - you never know what might happen. A lot of good idea's get stuck in the 'good idea' stage while people tweedle away at the same old same old day to day.

Far to many people out there could change the world (a little or a lot), but instead just putz along as the world moves forward. They need to know that acting on initiative is a good and rewarding thing!

Its late, but if you are like me, I suspect you are up right now working on your speech.

This month our store is hosting emerald..and two other food network chefs. all right how about what a dithering idiot dick cheney is? that's always a crowd pleaser on college campuses. and use plenty of f-bombs to bring it home.

but that will only buy you 5 minutes or so.

hmmm ... i know! talk about men bloggers who blog about the importance of women bloggers. like me for example. that's a twist (and what makes it funny is that i don't really do that).

Well this is my first comment on a blog, and I Loved your book, but not just loved it I am very similar to you...I too have PCOS and I love to cook, I have put my boyfriend through many of the same things you put your husband through. And as I am sitting here in my new house that I just bought on October 30th, he is plunging out the Kitchen sink and black chunks of "pipe shit" are coming up, and I just thought about your story of the sink gook you had to deal with. So I guess it just made me feel a little better about it thinking someone else has gone through this. But I don't have a landlord to talk to. It is up to me and my boyfriend so I think I am going to be snaking out the drain tonight when I get back from my parents house. So I guess thanks for writing about your miss fortunes in your book they make mine easier to deal with. Congratulations on getting asked to talk at your alma mater. I hope it went well.

Love the idea of how many people have found a voice through blogging about their passion. But also how about talking about finding the courage to follow your passion. And finding the courage to deal with success! Sometimes getting a lot of attention, being in the public eye, can get scary. Some people feel they can comment and criticize and say the cruelest things about people they don't know a thing about. (I can't tell you how many people I've heard say they would never run for public office--or even put their truth thoughts in a blog--because they couldn't handle becoming a "target.") You seem to deal with being in the public eye with grace.

I saw the movie and read both your book which I finished today, and "My Life In France". A few weeks back I purchased a 5 1/2 qrt Le Creuset stew pot for a ridiculously low price at the outlets. Five years ago My British boyfriend gave me a well known British cook's basic cookbook which I've barely ever touched. He's challenged me to go thru and cook each recipe (no deadline, no blog) and just record it in my diary. So far I've done a few and I really feel like I'm accomplishing something. Thank You Julie!!

I just watched Julie & Julia. I just wanted to say I think your story is so heartwarming, inspirational and I had to fight the tears throughout the movie. I "get" it. You weren't out to exploit Julia Child, if anything you inadvertently introduced her to a younger generation who may have not regarded her as the great cook and inspiration to American woman she was in the 1960's. I am 44 years old and I had only a vague memory of seeing her on tv as a child, (no pun intended :) when my mother would watch her and I never really knew anything else about her, until your book which inevitably became the movie. Congratulations in finding whatever it took to "find" yourself, a dilemna that many people face today. I didn't say women because I believe that it isn't an issue exclusive to women anymore. The difference between you and other people is that you got published and as a result, famous. Throughout the movie I had no idea it was based on a true story and at the end when I realized that it was I liked it even more. It had a "Sleepless in Seatle" flavor to it in that it compared the old to the new (generation)and the similarities between the two movies kind of says to me, there is no reason to reinvent the wheel and the old Ann Landers saying, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" At least thats who I think coined the phrase. The only sadness here is that it seems to be that Julia herself didn't appreciate the parallels that the two of you had save the generation gap and that you didn't get to meet her before she died. I think she would have liked you and in the end appreciated your "homage" to her.
I wish you the best of luck in your "new" life, an adventure for sure and I hope that the marriage issues were resolved. Unfortunately many times one partner in a marriage does the very thing that you did and it upsets the balance resulting in a divorce or separation. Hopefully you were one of the exceptionally few lucky ones to survive that.

Your blog was a product of a person looking for something in her life. it was very real and grass roots. Talk about how something so basic as the five senses led to you finding yourself. I thought of you this morning as I bought vegies from my local french village market...remembering the scene in the movie when you had the terrible fight with your husband but how purchasing seasonal produce, smelling it, touching it and eventually cooking it was like a therapy to you...your bad days at work....coming home to your "therapy" As a society I think we need to all return to grass roots, cook, garden, smell the roses once more. Today I saw the movie made from your book and I thought to myself... people today can still write original manuscripts and be published... It's pretty awesome to see a fellow blogger having so much fun in her dream job. I have that same dream and perhaps it's a lesson to me saying that I should not give up. I'm picking up my 30,000 word partial novel and continuing where I left off last year. Thanks, Julie.

I just saw Julie/Julia on a plane bound for Aruba last week.....inspiring. What you did - cooking your way through a cookbook, is something I would do myself. Having an inherent lust for fine food, and pleasing those around me with creative concoctions. Just renovated my kitchen with all the bells, whistles and gadgets that I "needed" as a suburban housewife...sadly, can never sell my house now!!!!! Not unless I can double what we paid for it. But I am enjoying it 100%. Good luck with your lecture!

Like most of the people commenting, I just had the honour of watching your film all the way in the tiny island of Bahrain!

It truly is an inspiration to see how someone can pull themselves out of a life that seems impossible to escape.
Starting out, and knowing that very few people have an interest in what you have to say, and just continuing on blew me away. Your perseverance and dedication is unbelievable, and I hope that one day I have enough courage and strength to turn my life into what I've always imagined it to be.

Thank you for everything.

Good luck with the lecture (believe me you'll love it!)

Dear Ms. Powell, I’m really not sure if you actually read all you comments but sure hope you do. Well where should I begin, I have so much to say.... Ok let me start from the beginning I guess. I just watched a movie about your book, I honestly didn't know who you were, but I was so anxious to see this movie; when I saw the trailer I said to my self "this is what I want to do ". I’m currently away from home.
Miles seem like centuries in plain hours; I’m a Dominican, no correction a Latina in Japan, and I’m ready to battle the sprout of boredom that is growing in my life.
I just got married to a Japanese and quite frankly I went from an honorable College student to a quiet housewife in just months, shocking isn’t it? So old fashion they are here. Specially coming from a small country girl like me, I mean Dominican Republic! God forbid someone say that is a develop country, since it inst even close. But we are not that alienated in the past, all thou Japan is. Ironic right, since they have so much technology in hand. Well my point is I need your help, I was wondering if you can come up with a good challenge for me, I’m not quite a blogger in fact never tried it really, but I’m stuck in “the getting used to living here” plus I currently have lots of Free time, so please share your wisdom.
Truly yours,
Mirtha

I think pretty much anything you talked about would be interesting as you're such a good writer. This is my first post because I just discovered yoy. I saw Julie & Julia on Sunday. I have my own little challenge: to see 100 movies in a year. Your film was film # 75. Last year it was to drink 1000 gins & tonic. I loved the film and bought the book on the way home. I am adoring it. And, at the risk of being a copy cat, my resolution next year is to cook 524 recipes. I have food intolerances so can't really follow a whole book, so will be picking and choosing from many, which is easier than your challenge, but still a challenge I guess. Anyway, thanks for your book. I will read Cleave next. You're great!

Hi Julie,

Sorry to write here about unrelated subject.

Yesterday, I watched the movie based on your book / blog / story. I already watched half of it but yesterday I watched along with huge plates of bruschetta, tomato and mozzarella on toasted bread along with red wine. (the movie's julie prepared bruschetta for a dinner so...)

However, If you don't mind, I just have a question: Weren't you ever been able to meet Julia? The end of the movie made me feel real sad though your stories are ones of the best feel good / motivating / uplifting stories.

Your story motivated me, as i'm known (at least to myself) that i never completed thing i started (it's been years with three generations of home computers and till now my budget program is not finished yet since i was in school with commodore 64).

Your story inspired me. Julia's as well. I love cooking and intending to write a cookbook for bachelors (as i'm still one of them) since two years... among other things in different areas like time management and computing.

Thank you for reading my message. It's my first visit to your blog just to send you this and ask the question. Since i'm at work now and cannot go through it here. Would do it from home.

Finally, it's always great to get motivated or influenced by someone and been able to meet or tell her/him about that one day. Just as what happened here with me now.

Cheers.

Hello Julie.
I'm from Argentina.
I have just finished watching the movie inspired in your book and I have to say I liked it very much.
Most of all, you have to know that the whole story gave me hope. And is not a minor thing.
I'm really thrill that you could get to do what you like, that now you really enjoy what you are doing: writting.
Even if some days you don't feel like it or even if sometimes you wish to have a payday check and not to worry for what to write, in the end you go to sleep feeling good with your life.
These simple things in this present times are very difficult to find for different and several reasons.
Well. I just wanted you to know that I really like your story (as far as now, from the movie) and that it gave me hope =)
PS: I'm looking forward to read your book now! It will be difficult to get it here I think, but I will the way!
Good luck in everything you do!

So many people today are faced with the same dead-end job/life as you found yourself in. When people hear speakers at their Alma Mater, they want inspiration and direction. I agree with the blogging concept, yet take it one step further. Your passion was writing, but cooking gave you the venue in which to express yourself. Ultimately, you found yourself through doing what you loved which was writing, but you connected with yourself and others through cooking. Your success was finding your voice.
Off topic, I find it wonderful that you have not given up on your BLOG/ original inspiration.

I'll keep hitting your blog every week. And using it to get strong to "write" my own path.
I know my English is not great, but I'm doing my best. I hope you can understand everything.
I'd love to meet you guys someday. If you have ever thought in traveling to South America, you must think Florianópolis (it's the city) Santa Catarina (the state). It's in south of Brazil, an island and I would say we have 42 of the most beautiful beaches from the south of the country.

But for my part i would say i lean towards French cooking as the greatest of all. Larousse is another perfect example. Anyway, while searching the website, i found no website dedicated to Julie Child at all. Just wondering why no one as tried to make a website in her honor. Hi Julie,

I am truly touched and driven by the movie which was shown just recently and I couldn't grasp on the right words to say...

Hurriedly sat myself out from the front row after the movie, searched through "Julie Powell" to see, if its real and if by any chance I can directly write to you.

Truly, there is a You and here you are, blogging through cyberspace and sharing your thoughts endlessly.

I will be having my job interview tom as a College Lecturer tom (err.. later in a few hours and I've yet to sleep but I have to finish the movie, I won't forgive myself either if I dont get to write you) and hoping that I, do, too will be able to inspire as much as you were inspired by Julia.

There are much more that I would want to say but I guess, I'd have to write you a personal email not a comment note.

Read from you, soon!

Last night I've seen the movie based upon your book, and wow! It's a very very great movie, and I'm feeling so happy and so proud of you, of your story, of all of what you've doing! In my mind what's happens to you is very wonderfull, and I love this movie, and I really wan't to read your book. If only you know how much I was so happy while i was watching this movie... your story... I don't know what to say to explain to you my joy, my feelings, and what I'm thinking about you and what you did! It's not easy to me to speak in english. Like you every years ago, I hope to become a writer too... I love writing since my childhood... When I was watching this movie I was thinking about me...because i've had a blog to write stories, my ideas... I just want to become like you, you're the woman that I just want to be... I know that I'll never meet you and so i just want to tell you just thank you Julie, it's because of you if now i'm feeling so happy and so enjoy...

Big Kiss to you and Eric.

Marine.

PS : I'm very very sorry if my english is'nt good...

I just watched the movie. It's amazing! Well Julie, you're just so inspirational. I didn't know how I could send my message across, so I just tried your blog. Well I'm just so happy 'cause I lost my laptop to the big flood (Ondoy) last September (I'm from Manila, Philippines). And I just got a new one and am trying my internet here at home. I decided to try looking for your name and I found this blogsite. I also have a blogsite of my own and you inspired me more that even if no one will read my blog, it's ok just as long as I have something to write about 'cause I have thoughts too. And now that I am actually reading your blogs, I feel closer to you, maybe almost similar to how you felt while reading or watching Julia Child, I don't know. It's really so hard to explain how elated I am to be reading your blogs...

Hi Julie!

I tried really hard (for like, 10 minutes) to find some sort of email address for you, but failing that I guess I'll say this in front of everyone.

I'm about halfway through "Cleaving," and you've already alluded to the expectation of some unfriendly response letters. (Perhaps primarily from vegetarians, but also for that other thing.) So I wanted to elbow in there with an early friendly one.

This book is fucking brave. Thanks for giving voice to... "un-traditional relationships," to grossly simplify and intentionally vague-ify the matter.

Can't write more now. Must read more now.

Cheers. - Pamela

Just wanted to say a sincere "Thankyou very much Julie Powell!!!!", not just from me but from our little family. We just ate our Thanksgiving dinner and you were included in our blessing. Then we tucked in to Boeuf Bourguignon, broccoli, carrots, salad and homemade bread...all made in our time share room...the only thing we brought was our Le Creuset cooker. It was great! You have inspired me to start a blog which supports my own business and it has been incredibly and unexpectedly successful. So Thank You Julie Powell...thankyou and have a blessed holiday season! xox mary ellen langieri

Julie,

Can I just say...if not for you, I would not have purchased MtAoFC. And I would not have had the most amazing Thanksgiving EVER. Duck a l'orange. Wow. It was orgasmic. It's too late now, but next time you're invited to talk, talk about how so many of us have rediscovered or discovered for the first time, something beautiful.

Hello there. I just watched the movie Julie and Julia. And thanks to the internet, I get to say hello to the person that wrote the story. (Even if I am the comment you skip reading because it is irrelevant to the post)

Even so, I think it's wonderful and amazing and I think it's so much fun. And in the adoration of a fan I can't say much that others haven't said before but even so, I'd like to have a say just because it's my sincere words to you: You are inspiring, just as Julia Child was inspiring. And one day I hope to be just like you.

Hey..this I am sure is a really dumb question...but I just finished reading Julie/Julia and am confused. Did you make apple aspic? Was the flashback just beating yourself up because you didn't make it with the other aspics???? When did you finally do it? Thanks ...Leslie Howard Madison Wi
